June Market Update

POSTED: June 29, 2016

Purchasers began the year cautiously amid rising cedar prices and limited log supply.  Housing markets in Canada and US were gaining strength. Oil prices slipped to $25 US per barrel and increased consumer spending was forecast.

By March-end however, mill order files were stretched to June and early July.  Limited supply pushed prices even higher, almost doubling that of the previous year.  Many vendors scrambled to support national programs with alternative supply as certain Cedar items became scarce.

The month of May brought the heat wave to the west and the increased forest fire hazard.  Fort McMurray, Alberta was evacuated, losing 10% of the town.  Oil prices recovered to just below $50 US and consumer spending in the building materials sector remain robust.  The recent Brexit decision not only affected EU Countries in Europe, but devalued stock markets worldwide.

Last week we celebrated our 10th year with a BBQ and Open House at our mill and fence panel facility in Surrey.  Over 100 of our suppliers, customers and friends came to participate in the festivities.  Some came up from Washington and west from Alberta.

We would like to thank everyone that came to our Open House Celebrations and we look forward to working with you on upcoming ventures.

As we edge closer towards the holiday season and celebrate another good year, Western Red Cedar trading is muted.  Most wholesalers and distribution yards have already secured their 2016 first and second quarter requirements earlier this Fall ahead of NAWLA meetings.  Prices reflect not only the shortage of supply,  but are driven higher by strong US housing data and the US dollar.

Worldwide financial markets are in turmoil following last weeks expected US interest rate hike.  Oil is hovering around $35 per barrel and may slide lower, while the pricing of Gold remains low at ~$1060.  The low oil and commodities prices are certainly concerns for the Canadian markets, especially here in the west.  However, the low Canadian dollar should help with  the manufacturing and export sectors.

The US economy seems to be progressing well with positive job growth and increase consumer spending.  There is much optimism with the residential and renovation sectors for the new year.

We wish you and your families all the best for the holiday season, and a prosperous New Year.  See everyone at the trade shows in 2016.
